Kelvingrove Park – the View at Sunset and Supper

A few hours, from Buchanan Street Subway and back.

The route

From the top of Kelvingrove Park, the University of Glasgow's Gothic tower stands against the western sky, and on a clear evening the sun goes down over the West End beyond it.

Wander down through the park past the great Stewart Memorial Fountain, then settle in for supper at Stravaigin on Gibson Street.

The day

Glasgow

An evening stroll through the West End's grandest park as the light goes, finishing at a busy, friendly restaurant just beyond its gates.

About three hours

  1. Kelvingrove Park

    Kelvingrove Park

    An attraction

This one is for the light evenings, from April to September; in the darker months, walk the park in the afternoon and keep supper for after. Take the Subway from Buchanan Street, beside Queen Street station, two stops to St George's Cross (check the times), then it's a 14-minute walk west through Woodlands to the statue of Lord Roberts near the top of the park. Look west across the trees to the University's tower on Gilmorehill, with the red sandstone of Kelvingrove Art Gallery below to the left; on a clear evening the sun goes down over the West End beyond them. Then wander 5 minutes down the slope to the Stewart Memorial Fountain, built in 1872 to celebrate the city's fresh water from Loch Katrine. Keep to the main paths as the light fades.

  2. 5 min on foot

    Stravaigin

    Supper

Walk 9 minutes on from the fountain through the park to Stravaigin at 28 Gibson Street, which serves food every day from noon until late, in its café bar, mezzanine and cellar. Karen Harvey of Hoos, a homeware shop on Great Western Road, says to try the haggis, which comes in a vegetarian version too. Book a table. Dogs are welcome in the café bar, and there's a children's menu. Kelvinbridge Subway is 5 minutes' walk away for the ride home.

If it rains

On a wet evening, skip the park and take the Subway straight to Kelvinbridge, 5 minutes' walk from Stravaigin.
