Glasgow

Troon's South Beach – Sea Air and Harbour Fish and Chips

A few hours, from Glasgow Central station and back.

The route

Troon is the Glasgow seaside you can reach by train, with a long sweep of sand on one side of its headland and a working harbour on the other.

Walk the South Beach with Arran across the water, follow the shore round to the harbour, and finish with fish and chips from the Wee Hurrie, the little chip shop by the fishing boats. It can all be done without a car.

Before you go

  1. Book accommodation nearby

If you are staying over: here are ours nearest where the day starts and ends.

The nearest of ours is Moment Blythswood Street. Sleeps 2.

The day

Troon

This is an afternoon on foot from the station, with the sea close by. Get your feet on the sand of the South Beach first, then walk round the headland to the harbour, where the fishing boats tie up and the fish and chips come straight from the fryer.

About three hours

  1. Troon's South Beach

    Troon's South Beach

    An attraction

Trains run from Glasgow Central to Troon through the day, so check the times. From Troon station it's about 6 minutes' walk down to the South Beach, a long sweep of sand backed by dunes, with the Isle of Arran across the firth on a clear day. At the town end there's a play park, crazy golf and a kiosk, and the toilets there open every day. Dogs aren't allowed on this beach from May to the end of September.

  2. 30 min on foot

    The Wee Hurrie

    Fish and chips

From the beach it's about 30 minutes' walk north-west along the shore, round the headland and along Harbour Road to the harbour. The Wee Hurrie is on Harbour Road beside the fishing boats, open from noon to 8pm every day but Monday; check the day's hours before you go. Take your fish and chips out and eat them looking over the harbour. On a Monday, eat at Scotts, the restaurant at Troon Yacht Haven, which you pass on the way. It's about 35 minutes' walk back to Troon station.

If it rains

In rain, keep the beach short and walk the seafront promenade round to the harbour; on a wet day Scotts at Troon Yacht Haven, on Harbour Road, has tables indoors and opens every day.
