Scotland's history is never far away. It's in standing stones, some of them older than the pyramids, in ruined abbeys in quiet river valleys, in brochs and Pictish carvings out in the fields, and on the battlefields where the country's story turned. A day built around them is a day of wandering through thousands of years, and it's surprising how often you'll have a place almost to yourself.
These days string the best of it together, so a morning among the stones can lead to an abbey after lunch and a castle on the way home. Every one is worked out stop by stop, with the drive between each place, where to eat, and what to book before you go, since many of the sites keep their own opening times and seasons. Bring a good pair of shoes, as the best places are often a short walk from the road, and plenty of curiosity. Choose where you're starting from, or simply pick a day that catches your eye.
