Scotland's gardens are some of its loveliest surprises. There are walled gardens hidden behind old stone, glasshouses full of colour whatever the weather, woodland gardens where rhododendrons flower in great drifts in late spring, and castle grounds laid out centuries ago and still beautifully kept. A day spent wandering through them is about as restful as a day out gets.
These days pair the best gardens with the things around them, a castle or a village, a gentle walk, and always somewhere good for tea and cake. Each one is worked out stop by stop, with the drive between each place and when the gardens are open, since many keep seasonal hours and some close altogether in winter. They're at their best from spring into early autumn, though a frosty winter morning in the right garden has a magic all of its own. Choose where you're starting from, or simply a garden that catches your eye.
