There's something about stepping through a castle gate that never gets old. Scotland has castles of every kind, from grand houses still lived in by old families to roofless towers standing alone on a headland, and a day built around one is one of the best days out there is. Whether it's a fairytale tower with turrets and a walled garden, a ruin on a rock with the sea on three sides, or a fortress high above a city, each of these days takes you there and makes a full day of it.
We've worked out every one stop by stop: where to go first, how long the drive is between each place, where to stop for lunch, and what to book before you go, since the busiest castles sell out their tickets in summer. Some are a gentle morning with coffee and cake in the castle tearoom; others string two or three castles together with a walk and a village in between. Choose where you're starting from, or simply pick one that catches your eye, and leave the planning to us.
