The whole of Larch House across its meadow: the larch-clad gable and long roof with roof lights, the lower wing beside it, a ring of river stones in the grass and oaks behind.

Places to Stay with a Wood-Burning Fire

A wood-burning stove, a full log basket and a long evening in front of it is half the reason to come to Scotland in winter. These are the places where the fire is the heart of the house.

Updated 22 September 2026.

There are few things better than a wood-burning stove on a Scottish evening. The logs in the basket, the kettle on top, the light on the walls, and outside the window the dark coming down early. It turns a cottage into a real refuge, and it's half the reason to come here in winter at all.

We've rounded up our favourite places to stay with a fire, from cabins for two to big houses. Every one of them is best booked for the months when it gets dark by four.
