Introduction

Time Away at Half of One is Time Out. Our very private 4-bedroom home on the coast of Skye is filled with warmth and care, decorated with taste and charm and distinguished by the charisma of authenticity. The magnificent views…the striking landscape…the peace and tranquillity… they all add up to a moment in time, a moment of pure Skye that you will never forget.

Nestled in the heart of the Isle of Skye, Half of One is more than just a house. It’s a bridge to the past, an original whitewashed 19th Century Skye Crofter’s Cottage that cradles the Island’s soul. As dawn breaks, the cottage becomes a front row seat to the mesmerising sunrise dramatically lighting up the peninsula with its striking rock formations; as the day unfolds the bay becomes an abundance of wildlife to include seals, otters, sea eagles and the occasional dolphin or whale… and sheep everywhere; night time will give you the most unforgettable views of the stars as well as the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.

Half of One isn’t just a place to stay… it’s the gateway to promising you an authentic Skye experience. It beckons you to indulge in the essence of the island, enjoy the charm of Scottish culture and to have joy in reconnecting and recharging whilst relishing the unparalleled beauty of Skye.

The cliff top location (perched alone at the end of a single track) is a treasure trove for those wanting solitude, to escape the crowds and experience a real taste of the island – a mere 5 minute stroll brings you to the secluded beach and further on to the tip of Brothers Point. Here the panoramic views will take your breath away – the epic Mealt Falls and Kilt Rock in the North, across the waters of The Minch the dark silhouette of the wee Isle of Rona in the East… all from your doorstep.

Every element of Half of One – from its robust, storm-resistant build to its tranquil and remote setting resonates with the spirit of Skye. It’s a place where time slows down, allowing you to savour every moment and promising you time out, whether it’s a serene morning watching the sunrise, an afternoon exploring the nearby natural wonders or an evening of snuggling up in front of the fire and giving you moments of peace and escape from every day. Although traditional, Half Of One has been lovingly restored to blend the charm of scottish heritage with the comforts of today.

Introduction

This is the kind of place people imagine when they picture Skye. A white crofter’s cottage set high above the sea, with views stretching across the Sound of Raasay and only the wind and wildlife for company. Half of One sits quietly near Brothers Point, just off the Trotternish Ridge, surrounded by open croft land and a sky that rarely looks the same for long.

The house dates to the 1800s but has been carefully restored, keeping the character while adding warmth and comfort. There are three bedrooms in the main cottage, a wood-burning fireplace, and a large dining area facing the water. A separate studio just across the garden offers extra space to sleep or somewhere to sketch, read or look out at the changing light. Outside, a short track leads to a quiet beach where dinosaur footprints can sometimes be seen at low tide.

Despite the remoteness, you’re well placed for exploring. Lealt Falls, the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing are all within easy reach, and Portree is just twenty minutes away. But most guests spend as much time as they can at the cottage, watching the weather shift over the cliffs, spotting sea eagles or seals from the window, and stepping out after dark to see the stars. On clear nights, the Milky Way cuts across the sky with no streetlight to soften it. It’s hard to leave without planning when to come back.

Location

Half of One is set above the sea in Culnacnoc, on Skye’s northeast coast. The cottage looks out across the Sound of Raasay, with uninterrupted views of the water and sky. It sits on traditional croft land, surrounded by open fields and close to the dramatic cliffs that define the Trotternish Peninsula. The setting feels remote, with no neighbours in sight, yet it remains practical for exploring. Staffin village is five minutes away, and Portree is just a 20-minute drive. The walking trail to Brothers Point begins nearby, and many of Skye’s best-known landmarks are within easy reach. Whether you're here for hiking, photography, or quiet time by the fire, the location gives you space to slow down and take in the island. There’s no through traffic, just wind, weather, and the distant sound of waves. It’s Skye at its most elemental, without needing to go far to find it.

Good to know

Half of One sits at the end of a single-track road with no passing traffic, so arrival requires careful driving, especially in poor weather. Parking is available just outside the gate. The property is fully enclosed, making it suitable for children and dogs, though care is needed around livestock on nearby croft land. The Wi-Fi runs via 4G and is reliable for streaming or video calls, but there is no landline and mobile reception can vary. The nearest shop and fuel station are in Staffin, ten minutes away, while larger supplies and restaurants are found in Portree, about 20 minutes by car. The studio sleeps two comfortably but is separate from the main house, so may not suit young children sleeping alone. Footpaths lead directly from the cottage to Brothers Point and a nearby beach, but some routes can be muddy or uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

What's nearby

Half of One is perfectly placed for exploring Skye’s Trotternish Peninsula. From the front gate, a short walk leads to Brothers Point, one of the island’s quieter coastal headlands, with dramatic cliffs and dinosaur footprints visible at low tide. Just five minutes north by car are Lealt Falls and the Kilt Rock viewpoint, where waterfalls plunge into the sea from basalt cliffs. The Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, two of Skye’s most iconic hiking spots, are within a 15 to 30-minute drive. Staffin village is five minutes away for basics and local produce, while Portree, the island’s main town, is 20 minutes south for restaurants, shops, and boat tours. For beach walks, fossil hunting, or watching the light shift over the Minch, you won’t need to go far. Many guests find that some of Skye’s most rewarding views and experiences begin right at the cottage gate.
