Dinner from the Shore to the castle.

Edinburgh's restaurants cover every kind of evening. Book a French restaurant on the Shore at Leith, dinner in a candlelit room at the castle gates, or small plates on Thistle Street. There are farm-to-table kitchens in Stockbridge, Japanese restaurants in Tollcross and Bruntsfield, and Victorian bars that serve oysters. Plenty of cosy neighbourhood places, too, where locals eat. Book ahead, especially at weekends and in festival season.

The Library, one of the suites at the Witchery by the Castle in Edinburgh, has a bathroom filled with books.

The Witchery serves high-end food in a former merchant's house dating back to the 16th century, just below Edinburgh Castle. Dining by candlelight in its original oak-panelled dining room is a unique experience. Upstairs, guests can spend the night in one of its indulgent suites, which run from the flamboyantly gothic Vestry to the opulent Library with its book-filled bathroom. It might not be the cheapest place to stay in the capital, but the magazine calls its spectacular interiors, and the views across the city from some of the suites, priceless.
