On Broughton Street, a white shopfront hung with signs, one of them reading Hounds Allowed, marks the way down a few steps into Pickles, one of the cosiest bars in the New Town.

Inside, the rooms are dark and snug, lit by candles and fairy lights: tartan benches, dark wood, mirrors and wreaths, antlers on the wall and an old Broughton Market sign hanging over the bar. The food is simple and generous. Platters come piled with Scottish cheeses, cured meats and pâtés, with oatcakes and bread and a great range of chutneys and, of course, pickles, and the chalkboard behind the bar lists the combinations. There are wines by the glass and bottle, beers and a good list of ciders to go with them.

Pickles opens every day from late afternoon, and from noon at the weekend. It takes no bookings, so it is a matter of turning up, and dogs are welcome.
