Scotland's oldest second-hand and antiquarian bookshop, open since 1957 below Haddington Place at the top of Leith Walk.

Welcome

At the top of Leith Walk, a few steps down from the pavement on Haddington Place, a curved basement front lined with window-shelves of old books belongs to McNaughtan's.

It opened in 1957, and it is the oldest second-hand and antiquarian bookshop in Scotland.

Inside, the rooms are lined from floor to ceiling with dark wooden shelves, and the stock runs from everyday second-hand copies to rare and collectable books, first editions and fine bindings, with old maps among them. The booksellers buy as well as sell, and they send out lists of their new finds from time to time.

The shop opens every day from eleven until five, and on Thursdays it stays open until eight. Typewronger Books and the Cookbook Shop are neighbours on the same stretch.

Hidden Scotland, the magazine

Scotland, in print.

We want to show you the best that Scotland has to offer. The makers and the creatives, the enduring experiences, the evocative tales, the concealed corners. The roads less travelled that take you to places that matter. The adventures that gather you up and sweep you away. The blend of the wild and the artistic that makes Scotland what it is. We’d love for you to join us.
