Halfway down curving Cockburn Street, a pale green front hung with flowers and gold laurel wreaths announces the Arcade, a haggis and whisky house.

It is one of the oldest bars in the city, and it has made itself a home for anyone wanting to try Scotland's most famous dish.

The haggis comes in many ways: the classic tower of haggis, neeps and tatties with a whisky sauce, but also in burgers, pies and starters, with vegetarian versions and gluten-free cooking for anyone who needs them. Behind the bar, under blackboards and stone walls, stand more than a hundred whiskies, from every corner of the country, and there are fair-trade teas for the daytime.

The Arcade is open for lunch and dinner every day, and for breakfast at the weekend. Tables fill in the festival months, and a call ahead on 0131 220 2520 saves a wait.
