Mimi's Bakehouse

On Market Street, across the road from Waverley station, the ground floor of the City Art Centre is home to a cafe of Mimi's Bakehouse, the family bakery that began on the Shore at Leith in 2010 and is now run by its second generation.

The room is tall and light, with big windows onto the street and a ceiling hung with open black-and-white umbrellas. The long glass counter is stacked with the bakery's cakes, scones, cupcakes, brownies and traybakes, and there is brunch all day and an afternoon tea that has won awards, with vegan and gluten-free choices throughout. The coffee comes from Machina, one of Edinburgh's own roasters, and the tea from Eteaket.

Mimi's opens every day from nine until five, and it makes an easy stop before or after the galleries upstairs. Mimi's has other cafes at Comely Bank, Corstorphine and Lauriston Castle.
