The Grandtully
Introduction
Grandtully is pronounced "Grantly", which is worth knowing before you ring to book a table. And you should book a table. The Grandtully opened in September 2018 in a restored Victorian railway hotel on the A827, the second venture from Chris and Rachel Rowley, who run Ballintaggart Farm and its cook school a few minutes up the road with Chris's brother Andrew. The restaurant holds two AA rosettes and seats around 30, with menus built on seasonal Scottish produce, some of it from the farm itself. There's an à la carte, a tasting menu and a slower Sunday lunch, plus the Tully Bar for cocktails, local gins and eating without the linen. A whisky lounge handles the drams. Upstairs, eight individually designed rooms have earned the hotel a Michelin Key two years running. Dogs are welcome in the bar but not the bedrooms.

Location
The Grandtully sits on the A827 halfway between Ballinluig and Aberfeldy, in the village of Grandtully on the banks of the Tay, directly across the river from Strathtay. The A9 is five minutes away at Ballinluig, which puts Perth at around 40 minutes and Edinburgh or Glasgow at roughly an hour and three quarters. Pitlochry railway station is the nearest, about eight miles off. Ballintaggart Farm, the sister property with its cook school and feast nights, is on the B898 near Balnaguard, a few minutes' drive from the hotel.
What's nearby
Iain Burnett, the Highland Chocolatier, is next door, and his velvet truffles have a following well beyond Perthshire. The Grandtully rapids are a short walk away on the Tay, one of Scotland's best-known stretches of white water, with rafting and kayaking run from the village. Aberfeldy is five miles west along the A827, home to Dewar's Aberfeldy Distillery and The Watermill, a bookshop, gallery and café in a restored 19th-century mill. Pitlochry, with its Festival Theatre and salmon ladder, is around 15 minutes north. Head the other way and Dunkeld makes a good half day, with The Hermitage's giant Douglas firs and waterfall a mile outside the village.
