Welcome

On the wooded shore of Loch Faskally, a short way north of Pitlochry, a dark log cabin sits under tall pines above a wooden jetty, where yellow pedalos and red rowing boats bob side by side on the still water.

Visited and photographed by Simon Hird

It is the Pitlochry Boating Station, a family-run business.

The choice is wide: rowing boats and pedalos, boats with outboard motors, ocean kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, with buoyancy aids included, and mountain bikes and electric bikes for the forest trails. Anglers can buy permits and hire rods for the loch and the River Garry, and fishing boats go out after salmon, trout and pike.

The Lochside Cafe in the cabin serves home baking, soups and toasties, with seats inside and out looking over the water. The station opens from Wednesday to Sunday in the season.
