Rannoch

Kin

Add to List

Introduction

Kin is one of three cabins at Red Hill Retreat, a small adults-only hideaway in the woodland above the south shore of Loch Rannoch. Wave to the resident goats on your way in, and you'll pass the sheep and ducks too before you reach the cabin. Once you're there, floor-to-ceiling windows run along one side, so the loch and the trees are with you from the moment you wake. There's a private deck with a fire pit out front, and Cally Woods sits right on the doorstep for a morning wander before anyone else is about. Inside, expect a kingsize bed (or twins, if you'd rather), a small well-fitted kitchen and warm, pared-back interiors made for slow mornings and long evenings. Kin shares a woodland sauna with the other two cabins, Loch and Rannoch, with a cold shower afterwards for anyone brave enough. And once it's dark, the night sky here is about as good as it gets in Britain.

Location

Red Hill Retreat sits in woodland above the south shore of Loch Rannoch, a few miles west of Kinloch Rannoch village, with Kin among the trees. Cally Woods is on the doorstep. Kinloch Rannoch has the nearest shop and pub; Pitlochry and the A9 are about an hour east.

Good to know

Kin sleeps two, with one bedroom and one bathroom, and is adults only. Check-in is 4pm and check-out 10am, though Red Hill's Longer Lie Guarantee gives you two extra hours when nobody's arriving that day. Dogs are welcome. The sauna is shared with sister cabins Loch and Rannoch.

What's nearby

Cally Woods and lochside paths start at the door. Kinloch Rannoch village is a few miles east for supplies and a pint. Further west sit the Moor of Rannoch restaurant and the tearoom at Rannoch Station, one of the most remote railway stops in the country.
