In the little village of Grandtully, where the Tay runs broad and rocky towards Pitlochry, a grey stone building with dormer windows is home to the Grandtully Hotel by Ballintaggart.

It is small and personal: eight bedrooms, four with roll-top baths, a bar, and a dining room of thirty covers.

Inside, the rooms are dark-painted and warm, with a long bar lit by pendant lights and backed by bottles and beer taps, shelves of wine and preserves, and tables laid for dinner under the windows. The cooking is Scottish and seasonal, drawing on the farms, rivers and hills around, and it has a place in the Michelin Guide.

There is a terrace outside for summer evenings, and the Tay is a few steps away. Rooms and tables are booked ahead.
