Blair Atholl Watermill

A working watermill in Blair Atholl, on a site milled since the 1590s, grinding its own flour for the bread, scones and cakes of its tearoom.

Down by the burn in Blair Atholl, an old stone mill with a great wooden water wheel stands among the trees, its walls thick and its windows small.

There has been a mill here since at least the 1590s, and this one still works, grinding oats and wheat between its stones.

The flour goes straight into the tearoom's baking. The bread, scones, cakes and pastries are all made on the premises from the mill's own flour, and the tearoom, with its low beams and scrubbed wooden tables, serves them with soup, light lunches and pots of tea. In fine weather there are tables out on the terrace under the trees beside the mill.

The mill's own flour and oatmeal can be bought to take home, and Blair Castle and the Falls of Bruar are both close by.

This handsome attraction is the country’s oldest watermill, still fully functioning, and stone-grinding oatmeal and flour in the traditional manner for the on-site tearooms. It dates back to the late 16th century, though it fell out of use in the 1920s before restoration began in the 1970s.
