Where to go in Perthshire.

Perthshire sits right in the middle of Scotland, where the Lowlands meet the Highlands, and it packs in a wonderful mix of both. There are castles and palaces where kings were crowned, wooded gorges with waterfalls, and long lochs reflecting the hills. Its towns are full of character, from the Victorian resort of Pitlochry to the cathedral town of Dunkeld and the Fair City of Perth itself. It's known as Big Tree Country for good reason, so bring walking boots. These are the places in Perthshire we think are most worth your time.

Some of the stones in Braan Sauna, beside the River Tay at The Taybank in Dunkeld, Highland Perthshire, were picked by hand from the river itself.

The sauna is heated by an award-winning, beehive-shaped wood-burning stove that gives off cedar-scented heat as it fires. Its founders, Fraser Potter and Kim Grant, say the effect is like pressing pause on the noise of everyday life. 'There’s the scent of woodsmoke and cedar, the River Tay rushing past the windows and through the arches of Dunkeld Bridge, and views of mist settling over the wooded Birnam Hill', says Kim. The sauna opens in autumn and winter only, with cold showers and plunge tanks, and the magazine's tip is to book a session over sunset, before the old lanterns on Thomas Telford's Dunkeld Bridge flicker on.
