Gardens in Big Tree Country.

Perthshire is known as Big Tree Country, and its gardens are a joy in every season. Wander the formal gardens below a castle near Crieff, first laid out in the 1600s, or a Himalayan woodland garden on a hillside above the Tay, full of rhododendrons and giant trees. There are gardens around palaces and castles, a riverside park in Perth, and a garden of bronze sculptures of Beatrix Potter's characters in Birnam, where she spent her childhood holidays. Go in late spring for colour, or autumn for the trees.

Beatrix Potter Garden.

The fabled creator of Peter Rabbit and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle spent many of her childhood summers here in Scotland, and this attraction is a charming one for kids, who can seek out statues of their favourite characters, explore a Victorian schoolroom, and much more. It forms part of the excellent Birnam Arts venue.

Around 1520 Robert Carver, a canon of Scone Abbey near Perth, wrote O bone Jesu, a piece of church music for nineteen separate voices.

Carver entered the community at Scone in 1508 and spent much of his life there, and he is regarded as Scotland's greatest composer of the 16th century. His motet, a sung setting of a sacred text, calls for nineteen vocal parts, eleven of them tenors, with high lines for boys above them. The abbey was destroyed in 1559, at the Reformation, but his music came through in the Carver Choirbook, which also holds his mass for ten voices and is kept today at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. Scone Palace now stands where the abbey stood.

The red squirrels at Cluny House Gardens, near Aberfeldy, come down to the paths for most of the day.

Bobby and Betty Masterton came to Cluny House, near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, in the 1950s and filled its woodland garden with plants from the Himalayas. A wellingtonia here measures more than eleven metres round its trunk.

An earl of Drummond set out to plant an avenue of trees running twenty miles from his garden at Drummond Castle, near Crieff, all the way to Perth.

Drummond Castle, in Perthshire, went up on its rocky outcrop around 1490, and the garden below it was transformed between 1630 and 1636 by the 2nd Earl, a Privy Councillor to James VI and Charles I; the sundial at its centre was set up in 1630. Towards the end of that century the 4th Earl began something a good deal larger: four rows of trees, from the castle to Perth. One of the gardeners working here at the time was John Reid, who went on to write The Scots Gard'ner in 1683, the first Scottish gardening book.

The first ever dig in search of Perth's lost Charterhouse has turned up medieval stone and pottery.

The monastery was founded by King James I in 1429 and destroyed after John Knox preached in Perth in 1559. Researchers from UHI and the University of Stirling dug in the gardens of the King James VI Hospital this month and keep an online dig diary.
