Cairn O'Mohr Fruit Wine

Out among the flat, fertile fields of the Carse of Gowrie, near Errol, a cluster of timber buildings with a lookout tower on top is Cairn O'Mohr, a winery unlike most.

Ron and Judith Gillies started it on their farm in 1987, and instead of grapes they make wine from what grows around them.

The wines are small-batch and seasonal, made by traditional methods from local fruit and flowers: strawberry, raspberry, bramble and elderberry, gooseberry and elderflower, and, most curious of all, wine made from oak leaves, picked in spring and again in autumn. The yard is crowded with barrels, crates and oddities, and the shop has free tastings to help anyone choose.

The Pickled Peacock, the cafe in the old farm buildings, serves breakfasts, lunches, cakes and drinks every day from ten until five, and tours of the winery run on set afternoons. It lies just off the A90 between Perth and Dundee.

Before you go

The shop has free tastings, and the Pickled Peacock cafe serves breakfasts, lunches and cakes from ten until five every day.

Winery tours run on set afternoons and can be booked.
