In the flat, fruit-growing country of the Carse of Gowrie, between Perth and Dundee, the Cairn O'Mohr winery makes wines from Scottish berries and hedgerows.

Its cafe, the Pickled Peacock, opened here in March 2021, in a quirky timber building with a red-trimmed gable and a deck of picnic tables.

Inside, the rooms are a riot of colour: teal velvet sofas, paper lanterns and garlands, a big peacock sign on the stone wall. The kitchen cooks with produce from Perthshire and Dundee and gives it a street-food twist, with sweet treats and savoury plates on the menu, and a glass of the winery's own elderflower, strawberry or oak leaf wine to go with them.

The cafe opens every day, and the winery shop and its strange garden of carved wood and old machinery are next door.

Born in 2021 and based at the Cairn O’Mohr winery, The Pickled Peacock is run by two sisters – Linsay and Holly Duncan – who oversee a quirky café that uses local produce, holds wine tastings, and generally turns a light bite or coffee into an unfettered joy. A special shout-out to the haggis, cheese and chilli jam toastie.
