West Cottage is a traditional farm cottage on Braeside of Lindores, the Black family’s working farm a mile from Newburgh in north Fife.

The architects Muir Walker and Pride renovated and extended it in 2021. It’s the closest of the four holiday houses to the farm, and Lindores call it the perfect place for a horse holiday. Lindores Equestrian, which Frances Black started in 1989, stables up to 36 horses from March to October, with 85 acres of cross-country course on the hill.

Downstairs is one big room for cooking, eating and sitting. It has a green kitchen, a log burner stocked with free logs and kindling, and wide glass doors looking out over the fields. Upstairs, two en-suite bedrooms make up as superking or twin, and a balcony with wicker chairs looks out over the farm. There’s a shower room downstairs and a double sofa bed too, so six can stay.

Out the back, the sheltered patio has a six-seater hot tub, a gas barbecue and a table for eating outside. Up to two dogs can come too.

Good to know: Wi-Fi, bed linen, towels, heating and electricity are all included. High chairs and travel cots can be hired, and children under five can’t use the hot tubs.

Up to two well-behaved dogs, for a small charge: off the furniture and beds, never left alone, and on a lead beyond the garden.

Emptied between stays and checked every day; no under-fives in it.
Shoots
Occasional game shoots from October to February, between 9.30am and 4pm: you get a text, and keep off the farm walks then.
Included
Linen and towels, heating, Wi-Fi, tea, coffee, sugar, dishwasher tablets and tea towels.
Quiet
Semi-detached, so keep the noise down after 10pm.
Horses
Bring your own, March to October: 36 stables, 85 acres of cross-country, an outdoor arena and off-road hacking. Book the stabling with the farm.
Charging
No EV charging at the houses; the nearest charger is in Newburgh, two miles away. Charging from a house costs £50.
Bikes
An open-air bike rack outside every house.
Smoking
No smoking inside the house.
Shops
A Co-op in Newburgh, a mile away, for everyday things; Tesco in Cupar for a big shop. Groceries can be delivered to the house.
By train
Ladybank is the nearest station: a taxi from there, or Stagecoach's 36 bus to Den of Lindores.

Lindores offers its own experiences to guests in the houses and to day visitors.

Lunch on the hillThe HideA BBQ cabin on top of Lindores Hill, for one party of 2 to 10 a day, from noon to 4pm. Bring your own food, or be hosted by a private chef and sommelier. Guests in the houses pay less.

Where it is

West Cottage is on Braeside of Lindores, a working farm on the south side of the Tay, a mile from Newburgh in north Fife.

Dundee is about 30 minutes' drive away, Edinburgh about an hour and Glasgow about an hour and a half. Coming from Edinburgh, take the M90 to junction 9 at Bridge of Earn; the farm is the first on the left after the Den of Lindores.

Getting hereA mile from Newburgh, on the south shore of the Tay, up the farm road on Lindores Hill; the drive to The Glasshouse is steep. The nearest railway station is Ladybank.
