The Stag, Falkland

A cafe, bar and restaurant in Falkland's old village pub, reopened by a group of neighbours and cooking with the most local produce they can find.

Falkland is one of the loveliest villages in Fife, gathered round its royal palace below the Lomond Hills, and for a while its old pub, the Stag, stood empty.

It was the sad sight of it that moved a group of neighbours to take it on together, pooling what they knew about wine, cooking, growing and design.

The Stag has reopened as a cafe, bar and restaurant, light and beautifully done inside, serving coffee, cakes and scones through the morning, lunches through the day and suppers at the weekend. The food is as local as it can be, and growers and producers from round about are invited to bring what they make.

In summer there are tables in the garden under pink parasols, and dogs are welcome at the tables on the balcony. It opens from Wednesday to Saturday, and booking by email is a good idea.
