In short

An attraction, on these pages, is somewhere you go to look at, and every one has been visited. Castles like Dunnottar on its cliff south of Stonehaven and Dunvegan on Skye; the brochs and blackhouses of the islands, Dun Beag above Struan and the Gearrannan village on Lewis; St Clement's Church at Rodel on Harris; the Grey Mare's Tail falling into Moffat Dale; whole towns worth the walk, Tobermory's painted front and Old Aberdeen's cobbles. Each entry says what it is, how long it takes and whether it earns the entry fee, and a good many of the best ones are free. Start with the divisions below if you know what you are after, or with a region if you know where you will be. Either way, check the opening times before you drive; the ones worth a detour tend to keep the shortest hours.

A cove of white sand and turquoise water among the rocks of Assynt, three miles from Lochinver down a winding single-track road, with Hermit's Castle on the headland. From our write-up of Achmelvich
