Arbroath Abbey
Introduction
The ruins of Arbroath Abbey have played host to some of the most important moments in Scottish history. The Declaration of Arbroath – the Scottish nobility’s statement of independence from England – was signed and sent to the Pope from that hall in 1320. Also in the Abbey, a marble effigy is placed in tribute of Scotland’s second-longest reigning king, the fiery King William the Lion. These elements merely scratch the surface of Arbroath’s rich tradition, all of which becomes stunningly real once inside those walls.
