Angus

Red cliffs, Pictish stones and the glens.

Angus runs from the red sandstone cliffs of the coast up into the long glens under the Cairngorms. Arbroath has its ruined abbey, where the Declaration of Arbroath was sealed in 1320, and a harbour where smokies are still made in the back streets. Montrose sits by a great tidal basin that fills with geese each autumn. Inland are Glamis, the Lindsays' castle at Edzell, Pictish carved stones at St Vigeans and Eassie, and Kirriemuir, where J.M. Barrie was born. Come in autumn for the geese, or in summer for the gardens.

Jillian McEwan farms cashmere goats near Lunan Bay in Angus, and at Easter the tiny kids are dressed in hand-knitted jumpers.

Scotland is famous for its cashmere, but the raw yarn has traditionally come from countries such as China, Mongolia and Afghanistan, and Jillian is setting out to change that. She gently brushes her herd of 135 goats to gather the cashmere, the soft undercoat that grows from the summer solstice until February or March. It is slow work and only a small amount is produced, so she is making a small collection with Johnstons of Elgin and sells the yarn online. In summer, visitors can comb the goats, learn to spin the yarn and try hand-dyeing in the beach bothy, and every Easter brings the Goats in Coats Festival.
