Welcome

On Seagate, the narrow street that runs behind Arbroath harbour, a low row of old stone buildings with orange doors and a lichen-covered roof is one of the town's smokehouses.

Arbroath Fisheries has been run by the same family since 1969, and it makes the smokie the town is famous for.

The haddock are tied in pairs by the tail and hung over hardwood fires in the smokehouse until their skins turn a deep, glowing gold, then sold warm across the counter, ready to eat. The shop also sells hot-smoked salmon and a full range of fresh fish, and the family's vans take smokies inland to Perthshire, with stalls at markets up and down the country.

The shop opens from Monday to Saturday, and the harbour wall is a minute's walk for eating a smokie warm.
