Bàern Cafe
Introduction
Bàern Café has become a standout part of Bowhouse, the East Neuk’s hub for small producers and growers. Run by Hazel Powell and Giacomo Pesce, the café is defined by a weekly menu that follows the seasons, shaped almost entirely by what arrives from neighbouring market gardens, flour mills and fishing boats. It sits in the old grain store at Bowhouse, a tall, open space with exposed beams, soft natural tones and a large picture window that draws in the surrounding countryside. A newly added mezzanine offers views across the Forth towards Bass Rock, giving the room a calm, airy quality.
Everything is made from scratch in the open kitchen, from preserves and ferments to Bàern’s much-loved sourdough, which Giacomo refines daily with flour from Scotland The Bread. The menu remains small and focused, with dishes such as haggis sausage rolls, bacon brioche and slow-cooked ragus showing how far simple ingredients can be taken in skilled hands. Nothing is wasted, with by-products often reused in creative ways, from kimchi brine worked into dough to vegetables repurposed for drinks. Recent seasonal evening sessions, served with organic wines from next door, reflect the café’s growing role as a community meeting place.
