Welcome

In the middle of North Berwick, a white-painted warehouse with a drawing of a camper van on its wall is Steampunk, a coffee roastery and coffee bar.

Visited and photographed by Simon Hird

It began in 2012 with coffee served from old VW camper vans around North Berwick and Edinburgh, and in 2014 it moved into this building, a former joinery workshop, and started roasting.

Inside, the warehouse is tall and full of character, with bare brick, old timber, a wood-burning stove, a bicycle hung on the wall and a mezzanine looking down over the room. The roaster sits in view of the coffee bar, and all the coffee is roasted here during the week, single-origin lots from around the world, poured as espresso and filter with home baking alongside. Bags of beans and brewing kit are for sale to take home.

Steampunk opens every day from nine until five, and it is a short walk from the station and the beaches.
