The Glen, North Berwick
A steep wooded glen running down to the sea at North Berwick, with a path by the burn past the ruins of old mills.
Just east of the harbour at North Berwick, a small burn has cut a steep, narrow valley down to the sea, and the whole of it is wooded.
The Glen is a quiet green world a few minutes from the busy seafront, with a path that follows the water under the trees and crosses it on a rustic bridge.
Part of the way down stand the ruined walls of old water mills, the Mills of Kintreath, which once belonged to North Berwick's medieval priory. In Victorian times the walk through the glen was known as the Ladies' Walk, and North Berwick was a holiday town for Edinburgh families. Robert Louis Stevenson spent boyhood summers here, and remembered them in his essay The Lantern-Bearers.
There are picnic tables among the trees, and where the glen opens out at the bottom, the view is across the Firth of Forth. It is free to walk at any time, and the paths can be muddy after rain.
