The whole of Larch House across its meadow: the larch-clad gable and long roof with roof lights, the lower wing beside it, a ring of river stones in the grass and oaks behind.

Remote Places to Stay in Scotland

Some places are worth every mile of single track road, because when you get there, there's nobody else for miles. From cottages on peninsulas to houses at the head of a glen, these are our most remote places to stay.

Updated 22 September 2026.

Scotland has some of the emptiest, wildest country in Europe, and some of the best places to stay are the ones that take a little effort to reach. Miles of single track road, a glen with no signal, a peninsula with one house on it. When you finally arrive, there's nobody else for miles.

We've gathered our most remote places to stay, from cottages at the end of a track to houses looking out over an empty coast. Bring plenty of food, check the road before you set off, and expect to see more deer than people.
