Wester Ross
The Net Store
Introduction
Tucked into the rocky shoreline of Loch Torridon, this modernist retreat in the hamlet of Ardheslaig combines architectural flair with the raw beauty of the northwest Highlands. Built in 2014 on the site of a fisherman’s net store, it was designed by the owner to honour her family’s crofting roots while embracing wide views and minimal, eco-conscious living.
The house sleeps up to four, with two bedrooms featuring Hypnos beds, Egyptian cotton sheets and ensuite or spa-style bathrooms. The interiors lean Nordic, with pale oak floors, wool headboards and deerskin rugs, all focused around a central wood-burning stove and full-height glass windows that look directly onto sea and sky.
Otters often fish in the bay, red deer wander nearby and seals are regular visitors. Binoculars, board games and a well-stocked kitchen (complete with Neff appliances and a boiling-water tap) make it easy to settle in. A mezzanine with a desk and second lounge offers a space to read, work or stargaze through the skylight.
Though Ardheslaig has no services, the village of Shieldaig is just a 10-minute drive away for supplies, kayaking or local seafood. The road south toward Applecross traces cliffs, coves and coral beaches. Hikers can reach Beinn Alligin or explore sea eagle territory around Shieldaig Island.
The Net Store is open year-round. Weekly stays are standard, with short winter breaks available. The owners live locally and are on hand if needed. For privacy, comfort and wilderness, this place is hard to beat.
