Wester Ross

Rhuroin

Introduction

Tucked into a wooded headland above Loch Shieldaig, Rhuroin is a quiet, carefully restored cottage on the remote Applecross Peninsula. It sits within 38 acres of private land—birch and pine woods, rocky shoreline, and rough lawn running down to the water. The location is secluded but not cut off: the village of Shieldaig is just a few miles down the road, offering a shop, café and small restaurant. Beyond that, the landscape opens into Wester Ross, with the Torridon mountains rising to the east and the wild Atlantic to the west.

The cottage itself is compact and well designed. Downstairs, there’s an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area with maple floors, built-in wooden units and a wood-burning stove set into a stone wall. Upstairs are two bedrooms—one double, one single—plus a deep bath and views of the loch from nearly every window. It’s the kind of place where the details matter: shortbread and coffee on arrival, wildflower prints on the walls, good knives in the kitchen, a pair of binoculars by the window.

There’s no television signal, but there is Wi-Fi. There’s no passing traffic, but a kayak or paddleboard can take you across to the village if the weather’s calm. Rhuroin is best suited to couples or small families looking for quiet, for space, and for time spent outdoors. Walkers, swimmers, birdwatchers and readers will feel at home here, especially those who prefer privacy and self-sufficiency to anything packaged or overdone.

Facilities & Services

Rhuroin is fully equipped for a comfortable self-catering stay. The kitchen has modern appliances, good cookware, and pantry basics like herbs, oil, coffee and tea. There’s a wood-burning stove, oil-fired central heating, fast Wi-Fi, and a landline for areas with no mobile signal. The bathroom has a deep bath, organic toiletries and soft towels. A washer, dryer and drying cupboard are handy after wet walks. Books, board games and a smart TV with streaming services are provided. Outside, there’s a small seating area with loch views, private parking, and access to the shoreline for swimming, kayaking or just sitting quietly.

Location

Rhuroin sits on the Applecross Peninsula in Wester Ross, one of the most remote and scenic corners of the Scottish Highlands. The cottage is tucked into a wooded slope above Loch Shieldaig, with direct access to the shore and uninterrupted views across the water to the Torridon peaks. It’s reached via a narrow single-track road that loops around the peninsula—slow going, but worth every mile. Inverness, the nearest city and airport, is about two and a half hours away by car. The drive passes lochs, mountains and some of the oldest rock formations in Europe. For those arriving by train, the nearest station is Strathcarron, followed by a 45-minute drive. The location feels cut off in the best way: no traffic, no streetlights, no noise. Just trees, water, and space. It’s an ideal base for exploring Wester Ross or simply staying put and watching the light shift across the loch.

Good to know

Access is via a gravel track off the single-track coast road—perfectly driveable, but take it slowly. The property is not wheelchair accessible, and all bedrooms and the bathroom are upstairs. Mobile signal is limited, but Wi-Fi and a landline are provided. The cottage sleeps a maximum of three guests, plus one infant (by arrangement). Weekly bookings run from Monday to Monday; short stays may be available in winter. Dogs are not allowed. EVs can be charged via a standard socket at cost price. The nearest shop and café are in Shieldaig, about 2.5 miles away.

What's nearby

Shieldaig, the nearest village, is a five-minute drive or a bracing walk along the coast road. There’s a well-stocked shop, a café, and a small pub serving local seafood. From the jetty, guided kayak trips explore the loch’s sheltered bays, and in summer, there’s often a fête or pop-up market. A little further east, the dramatic Torridon mountains offer some of Scotland’s best walking—everything from low-level trails to full-day scrambles up Beinn Alligin or Liathach. Applecross, reached by one of Britain’s most scenic drives, has a legendary inn, a walled garden café and views across to Skye. For quieter days, nearby woodlands and shoreline tracks offer gentle walking with minimal effort. There’s also a smokehouse in Shieldaig and a few roadside honesty boxes selling eggs, jam or knitwear. While the area is remote, day trips to Gairloch, Lochcarron or the beaches beyond Applecross are all well within reach.
