Where to eat in Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeenshire is farming country, with beef from its fields, soft fruit from the Mearns and fish landed at its harbours. You'll find farm cafés famous for their strawberry tarts, bakeries turning out butteries, speciality coffee roasters and fish and chip shops on the seafront. There are old coaching inns by the Dee, an inn on the cliff above a fishing harbour and city restaurants that cook with all of it. Book ahead for dinner, especially on summer weekends.

Leanne Townsend, who teaches foraging, found her calling as a young woman in rural Aberdeenshire, when she came across yellow chanterelle mushrooms in the mossy birch woods.

Her start came much earlier, when her grandmother took her brambling, picking blackberries in the hedgerows for pies, crumbles and jams. After the chanterelles she moved on to other wild mushrooms, then greens, fruits, flowers, seeds, nuts, seaweeds and herbs. Today she preserves her harvests as jams, pickles and ferments, makes homemade liqueurs, and shares it all through her courses and workshops. 'The wonderful thing about foraging is that even the most seasoned expert still has a lot to learn,' she says. In Scotland you may gather food for your own table without the landowner's permission, as long as you act responsibly.

Alex Murray, born and bred in Portsoy on the Aberdeenshire coast, grew up working on a dairy farm before he opened the Portsoy Ice Cream café in the village in 2003.

That upbringing gave the business an element of continuity, and the much-vaunted café has gone on to win award after award for its artisan ice creams and sorbets. Portsoy itself is a charming coastal village to visit at any time of year, with winding streets and an attractive harbour. Look out too for the local jewellery, made from a serpentinite stone known as Portsoy marble. A wander round the harbour followed by a cone from Alex's café is a lovely way to spend an afternoon on this stretch of the coast.
