Aberdeenshire bakes well. There's a family bakery by the Balmoral road, built where the village garage once stood, and farm shops whose kitchens turn out cakes, pies and bread from their own produce. One fruit farm in the Mearns is famous for its strawberry tarts in summer. Look out for butteries, the flaky, salty rolls the north-east has made for generations. Arrive early for the best of the baking, as the favourites go fast.
