Down a flight of steps from Belmont Street, the Tippling House is a cellar bar inspired by the cosy bars of Italy's city centres.

It opened in 2012 and has been a favourite place for a cocktail ever since.

The room is low and dimly lit, with wooden booths upholstered in tweed, a pressed-tin ceiling and warm lamps hanging over the tables. The bartenders know their craft: the cocktails are made by hand, from classic sours with a cherry to theatrical creations under a dome of bubbles, and there are tasting flights of spirits for anyone who wants to explore. A short menu of food, made with produce from local suppliers, goes alongside.

It is close to the Art Gallery and His Majesty's Theatre, so it suits a drink before or after a show. The bar opens from Tuesday to Saturday, from the late afternoon until late.
