Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, City Centre

The Green

Add to List

Introduction

Originally an area of Aberdeen where flint working would have taken place, preparing implements for hunting and fishing more than 8,000 years ago, The Green and its surrounding areas are among the oldest known parts of the city. Until the development of Union Street, The Green also formed the main entry point to Aberdeen. But it has a somewhat chequered history, with child kidnapping in the 18th century and, before that, witnessing the tumultuous events of the Reformation. Today, the area remains a market centre for Aberdeen and in 1995, it was redeveloped to become a pedestrianised area, with housing constructed on the south side.
