The Famous Lost Sign

Add to List

Introduction

On the western edge of Bellabeg lies a minor road leading to Lost, a hamlet whose name has become a source of endless fascination. The road signs for Lost were so frequently stolen as souvenirs that Aberdeenshire Council considered renaming it "Lost Farm." Thankfully, the name stayed, and modern signs are now more securely installed to deter theft. The road itself ends in the farmyard of Lost, but the stories it has inspired linger far beyond.

Bellabeg, nestled within Strathdon, is a tranquil hamlet with a shop, community hall, and traditional stone cottages. It is best known for the annual Lonach Gathering, one of Scotland's most celebrated Highland Games, which continues to draw crowds each summer. Though once patronised by Billy Connolly during his residence at nearby Candacraig House, the estate has since transitioned into an exclusive-use venue, adding a touch of luxury to the area.

Nearby, the Doune of Invernochty, an imposing 12th-century motte-and-bailey castle mound, offers a glimpse into Scotland's medieval past. For those venturing further, the quiet road past Lost leads through Glen Nochty to remnants of abandoned settlements like Belnabodach, reflecting the area’s long history of change.

Bellabeg’s understated charm, coupled with the quirky allure of Lost, makes this corner of Donside a fascinating destination for those drawn to its unique blend of history and mystery. Whether visiting for the Highland Games or to explore the quiet lanes and historic sites, Bellabeg promises a story at every turn.
