Edinburgh
Edinburgh Riding of the Marches
Introduction
Edinburgh’s Riding of the Marches is one of the city’s oldest public ceremonies, tracing its roots to the 16th century. Around 280 riders follow the Lord Provost into the city, accompanied by pipe bands, flag bearers and community groups. The procession gathers at Holyrood Park before moving up the Royal Mile to the Mercat Cross, where historic ceremonies take place. This free event attracts large crowds and provides a striking display of horses and pageantry in the heart of the capital.
