At the front of the InterContinental Edinburgh The George, a dark timber shopfront with bay trees in planters at its door and gold lettering on the windows opens straight onto George Street.

Burr & Co is the hotel's coffee house, but it belongs just as much to the street, with its own door and a steady stream of people who are not staying upstairs.

The windows spell out the menu: coffee, pastries, sandwiches and salads. The room is bright, with cosy corners for a morning with a laptop or a newspaper. It serves breakfast and light lunches through the day, with beer and wine, and from eleven there are cocktails too, spritzes and espresso martinis among them.

Burr & Co opens every day until five in the afternoon, and dogs are welcome in the daytime. St Andrew Square and the Portrait Gallery are a few minutes' walk away.
