Welcome

Roti canai is the dish to come for at Roti King, a Malaysian restaurant on South St Andrew Street, just off Princes Street and a few minutes from Waverley Station.

The flaky, buttery flatbread comes two pieces to a plate with a curry for dipping, from dhal to beef rendang, mutton, chicken or fish. Beyond the roti there's murtabak, a roti stuffed with lamb or with spinach and cheese, nasi lemak with spiced fried chicken and sambal, char kuey teow and a coconut kari laksa. Save room for a sweet roti with warm condensed milk, banana or kaya coconut jam, and a glass of teh tarik, the frothy pulled tea. Roti King began in London, and this is its first restaurant in Scotland. There are no reservations, so just walk in. It's open every day from 11.30am to 10pm, with the last table seated half an hour before closing, and it takes cards only.
