The Dome

A bar and restaurant in the old Commercial Bank of Scotland on George Street, built in the 1840s behind a Corinthian portico, with a great domed hall.

Near the St Andrew Square end of George Street, a flight of steps climbs to a great Corinthian portico, its pediment crowded with carved figures.

This is the Dome, built in the 1840s as the head office of the Commercial Bank of Scotland to designs by David Rhind, on the site of the Physicians' Hall that James Craig, the planner of the New Town, had designed in 1775.

The old banking hall is now the Grill Room, a vast space under a coffered dome, with marble columns, gilded plasterwork, chandeliers, a mosaic floor and a circular bar at its heart, where lunches, dinners and cocktails are served. Beyond it are the Club Room and the Georgian Tea Room, quieter rooms for afternoon tea and a drink. At Christmas the portico is famously dressed in lights and greenery.

The Dome opens every day from ten in the morning until late. Tables can be booked.
