Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Old Town
Virgin Hotel Edinburgh
Introduction
Virgin Hotels Edinburgh, housed within the historic India Buildings on Victoria Street, opened in 2022 as the brand's first venture outside the United States. The property combines 19th-century architectural features with contemporary design elements, creating a unique aesthetic. Its central location in Edinburgh’s Old Town offers convenient access to major attractions such as Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile.
The hotel has 222 rooms, referred to as Chambers and Grand Chamber Suites, designed with a blend of heritage and modern style. Features include high ceilings, wooden panelling, rainfall showers, and signature Virgin touches like mini red SMEG fridges stocked with local products. Rooms are equipped with king-size beds, versatile seating areas, and 50-inch streaming-enabled TVs. Practical additions such as yoga mats and filtered water bottles highlight attention to detail, while toiletries from a Scottish brand add a local touch.
Guests enter the hotel from Victoria Street at Level 6, where the reception, bar, and Commons Club restaurant are located. The striking Oculus dome, a restored original feature of the building, provides a light-filled seating area on Level 8. Navigating the property can be challenging due to its complex layout, influenced by the sloped terrain of its surroundings. The roof terrace on Level 7 offers views of the city and Edinburgh Castle, though it is not equipped with a bar or other amenities.
Dining options include the Commons Club, a sophisticated bar and restaurant on Level 6, and Eve, a vibrant all-day dining venue located on Level 1. Eve’s menu focuses on small plates and is complemented by an events calendar, which can occasionally affect the dining atmosphere. For a quieter and more refined experience, the Commons Club restaurant serves a selection of Scottish-inspired dishes.
The hotel also features a 24-hour gym equipped with Technogym machines and a selection of meeting and event spaces. Notable among these is the Greyfriars, a repurposed medieval church with vaulted ceilings, capable of hosting up to 150 guests.
With its lively public spaces, thoughtful design, and central location, Virgin Hotels Edinburgh appeals to visitors seeking a blend of comfort and vibrant energy. The combination of historical character and modern amenities makes it a distinctive option for a city-centre stay.
