Ironstone Mine at the Old Pier
Introduction
During World War One, a workforce of German prisoners-of-war and men from Belgium, Italy and Lanarkshire built two substantial ironstone mines to help the Allied effort. After several years of high production the works were abandoned, but much of the infrastructure remains as a stirring reminder of the past.
Location
To reach the Ironstone Mine at the Old Pier on Raasay, start from the ferry terminal at Churchton Bay. Follow the road along the bay, then take a tarmac lane to the right and immediately fork left. Before a gate, turn right onto a signed path, go through a kissing gate, and cross a grassy field. Continue through two more gates, pass Raasay Community Hall, and rejoin the road towards Inverarish. Turn right at a T-junction, follow the road to East Suisnish pier, and take the uphill footpath opposite. Continue along the old railway bed, through a forest, and follow signs to the Ironstone Mine.
