Coruisk House is a small restaurant with rooms in a whitewashed croft house at Elgol, at the end of the 13-mile single-track road from Broadford across Skye’s Strathaird peninsula, where the boats leave for Loch Coruisk.

Iain Roden and Clare Winskill have been turning their home into a restaurant with rooms since 2011. Dinner is a four-course set menu at 7pm, £105 a head, booked ahead, with langoustines and lobsters creel-caught in Loch Scavaig and landed at Elgol harbour a few steps from the door, and bread Clare makes in the house.

Upstairs, some of the rooms are tucked under the eaves. There is a room with a Victorian half-tester bed, another with a cream iron bed, and two Steading suites, the lower one with a slipper bath and the upper one able to sleep four. All four rooms are en suite and breakfast is included. Next door is An Nead, a thatched cottage, and Tigh Mairi is a stone-built cottage in the style of an 1800s croft house. Walk down to the harbour before dinner, when the Cuillin show across the water if the cloud lifts.

Room rates are per room, not per person, and include breakfast; dinner is extra, at £105 a head for the four-course set menu at 7pm, booked at least 24 hours ahead and not served on Mondays. Dinner is served from 1 March to 30 October, and the house closes from the second week of December to the last week of January. Every room sleeps two, except the Upper Steading Suite, which can take up to four. Children under 14 can’t stay in the rooms in the house but are welcome at An Nead, which also takes one large or two small dogs at no charge. The rooms are on the first floor and not suitable for anyone who cannot climb stairs, and the cream iron bed room has a low ceiling; An Nead is on one level. There is no smoking anywhere near the house.

Coruisk House is at Elgol, a fishing village at the far end of the Strathaird peninsula on the Isle of Skye.

It's 13 miles of single-track road from Broadford, the nearest town, along the B8083 by Loch Slapin, and just under 40 minutes from the Skye Bridge, so you'll need a car. Mobile signal is patchy, so download your maps before you set off. From Elgol harbour, the Misty Isle boat trip to Loch Coruisk takes about 45 minutes, and the walk there along Camasunary beach and over the Bad Step is around 10 miles, for experienced hikers only. Fast boats from the harbour also run to Canna, Rum and Soay, and the owners list dolphins, whales, seals, puffins and sea eagles among what you might see. Bla Bheinn, the mountain above Loch Slapin, is five to six hours of climbing, and the ruins of Kilchrist Church, the parish church of Strathaird for over 300 years, stand by the road in.
