Bothan Beileag
Introduction
On the hillside above Loch Eishort, Bothan Beileag gives you a peaceful base on Skye without feeling cut off. It’s a shepherd’s hut for two, with a double bed, a small table, and a wood burner to keep things cosy. Windows look out across croft land to the sea and mountains.
Electric heaters, extra blankets, and robes make it comfortable year-round. The private bathroom is a short walk away, with a power shower and flushing toilet. A torch is provided for the walk, and the facilities are kept spotless.
Outside there’s a fenced garden, a firepit, and safe space for dogs. Guests also have use of a communal shed with a range cooker, fridge, and room to prepare bigger meals. Breakfast baskets can be ordered, filled with eggs from the croft hens and fresh bread.
It’s a quiet spot, but Broadford is only a few miles away for shops, cafés, and pubs.

Facilities & Services
Bothan Beileag keeps things simple but well thought-out. There’s a double bed with fresh linen and extra blankets if the night turns cold. A wood stove sits in the middle, with electric heating to back it up. Towels and bathrobes are included, and the bathroom is private to you. It isn’t inside the hut, though. It’s a short walk across the yard, with a hot shower and proper toilet.
The kitchenette has a kettle, a fridge, and a hob for quick meals. If you want to cook more, the Big Shed has an oven, range cooker, and space to sit down and eat. There’s also a covered barbecue outside and even a microwave in the summerhouse.
Evenings are easy: board games, puzzles, guidebooks, and a stack of DVDs if the weather keeps you in. Wi-Fi isn’t here, but phone reception is fine. Outside, the garden is fenced, with a firepit and picnic spot that looks across the loch. Dogs are welcome, with supplies waiting when you arrive.
Location
The shepherd’s hut is in Heaste, reached by a single-track road about four miles south of Broadford. From the garden you can look across Loch Eishort toward the Knoydart hills on the mainland and, on a clear day, the Isle of Rùm. It feels remote, but Broadford is still only around ten minutes away for shops, fuel, and cafés. Parking is right beside the hut, which makes unloading easy. The land here is crofting ground, so you’ll often see sheep or cattle in the surrounding fields. The location gives you a sense of being tucked away while keeping the essentials within reach.
Good to know
Bothan Beileag is set up for two adults, with bookings limited to guests aged 16 and over. Families and groups aren’t taken. Dogs are allowed, with a fenced garden giving them secure space outdoors. The bathroom is yours alone, though not en-suite. It’s a short walk away with a proper toilet and shower. Towels, robes, and a torch are provided. Wi-Fi isn’t available, but the mobile signal is good. Parking is next to the hut. The nearest shops and restaurants are in Broadford, about a ten-minute drive.
What's nearby
Broadford is about ten minutes by car, with a supermarket, fuel, and several places to eat. Deli Gasta is good for breakfast or lunch, Café Sia serves pizzas and sometimes live music, and The Claymore is known for seafood. From the village you can head south toward Sleat or north to Portree and the Trotternish Peninsula. Closer to the hut, the single-track road ends at Heaste, where a small jetty looks over Loch Eishort. It’s a quiet spot for coastal walks, and you may see seals on the rocks or eagles overhead.
