Armadale Castle Gardens

Add to List

Introduction

Armadale Castle, Gardens & Museum is a captivating destination on Skye’s Sleat peninsula, combining a ruined fortress, 40 acres of stately woodland gardens, and an award-winning museum. The castle itself dates back to the 18th century and was once the seat of the powerful Clan Donald. Although now a romantic ruin following a fire in 1855, it still holds a powerful presence overlooking the Sound of Sleat.

The gardens, originally laid out in the early 19th century, are a highlight of any visit. Wander through tranquil waterlily ponds, vibrant herbaceous borders, and charming terrace walks, all while enjoying panoramic views across the Sound of Sleat to the mainland. Magnificent trees, some over 100 years old, provide a majestic canopy, and the Victorian arboretum features some particularly fine specimens. The gardens also boast a unique microclimate, allowing a surprising number of exotic plant species to thrive.

But there’s far more to Armadale than just gardens and a ruined castle. The estate is also home to the Museum of the Isles, where you can delve into the history of Clan Donald and the Highlands and Islands. Discover fascinating artefacts, including those related to Viking, Jacobite, and crofting history. Families can enjoy the adventure playpark and museum trails, and there’s a welcoming café in the converted Stables building serving refreshments and home baking.

Getting there: Armadale is located on the Sleat Peninsula in the south of Skye. It’s easily accessible by car, with parking available on-site. You can also reach Armadale by ferry from Mallaig on the mainland.

When to visit: The gardens are open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm between 1 April and 31 October. Winter opening hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 am to 5 pm.

Admission: Adult £14, Seniors and Concessions £12, Child (5-15) £8. Family groups receive a 10% discount, and under 5s go free.

Armadale Castle, Gardens & Museum is a truly special place, offering a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. Whether you’re interested in exploring the castle ruins, learning about Clan Donald, or simply enjoying a peaceful stroll through the gardens, Armadale has something to offer everyone.
