The Old Forge stands on the shore road in Inverie, a low white building beneath the Knoydart hills.
It is one of the few community-owned pubs in Scotland, and getting to it is half the story: there are no roads, so you arrive by a seven-mile crossing from Mallaig or an eighteen-mile walk over the mountains.
Inside, the bar room has a timber roof, a woodburner, a pool table that is free to use and guitars lying about for anyone who can play. The beer comes from the Knoydart Brewery, about half a mile up the road, and the restaurant makes a point of using local suppliers.
The pub opens from noon every day, with hours that change with the season, and the restaurant should be booked ahead. Visitors praise the atmosphere and the friendly staff.
