Kinloch Lodge is a white country house hotel on the shore of Loch na Dal, in Sleat in the south of Skye, between emerald hills and the water, with the Cuillin in the distance.

The land held a farmhouse in the mid-1600s, then a shooting lodge, a public bar and a family home, and the hotel opened in 1972, when Godfrey Macdonald, 8th Lord Macdonald, and his wife Claire set out to make a place with comfy beds, endless hot water and delicious food. After more than five decades of Macdonald family ownership, the keys have passed to the Wickman family, who have run hotels on Skye for more than thirty years.

Inside there are roaring fires and bedrooms in the North and South Lodges, some with a bathtub looking out to the view, and the kitchen cooks with food grown, gathered and reared close by. The lodge’s own ghillie, Mitchell Partridge, leads foraging, fly-fishing and wild walks in Kinloch Forest and along the loch shore, and the hill walk to Leitir Fura starts from the door.

There’s a roaring fire to sit by, a lawn with a firepit, and bedrooms in the North and South Lodges, from cosy doubles to luxury rooms and suites, some with a bathtub looking out to the view.

Rooms
Three kinds, across the North and South Lodges: Cosy Doubles, Luxury rooms and suites.
Dogs
In some bedrooms only, one to a room, £25 a night. Not in the dining room or public rooms; on a lead on the estate.
Children
With an adult: a few rooms take a child on a sofa bed, £65 a night with breakfast. Ask when you book.
Meals
Three a day at set times: breakfast, lunch and dinner, and an all-day menu at any hour. Book a table for up to four online.
Allergies
Tell the restaurant before you come: it cannot promise a dish free of an allergen.
Parking
Free, with charging points for electric cars.
Wifi
Free, all through the lodge. The details come at check-in.
Paying
No deposit: a card holds the room. Paid in full 15 days ahead from April to October, 5 days ahead from November to March, then not refundable.
Smoking
Not in the bedrooms or anywhere indoors, and no vaping.
Getting about
Bring a car if you can: buses are few and taxis need booking. Fill up with fuel when you see a station.
Where it is

Kinloch Lodge stands on the shore of Loch na Dal in Sleat, the southern peninsula of Skye (IV43 8QY), with the hills behind it and the Cuillin in the distance.

A short drive down a winding road, over a small river and under a canopy of trees, brings you to the main building. Rooms look across Loch na Dal and out to the Sound of Sleat, or over Kinloch Hill.
