Welcome

Right beside the railway station in Mallaig, the Heritage Centre is a small museum that tells the story of West Lochaber, its people and its landscape.

An hour here fits neatly before a train or a ferry.

Inside, photographs, films, collections and displays cover the life of this remote corner of the Highlands, from the fishing that built the town to the railway that reached it in 1901. Mallaig grew from a single farm into what was, by the 1960s, the busiest herring port in Europe, and the centre brings those years to life. Films are shown on request, and guided tours can be arranged in advance.

In 2026 the artist Rob Fairley returns with his Mallaig Pier Portraits, drawings of the people who work around the pier. Adults pay £3, and children go free.
